About Robert Cuming

I have been working as a therapist for the past 15 years and more recently as a therapeutic retreat group leader. My work is devoted to supporting your journey – whether that’s reconnecting with the parts of yourself you’ve lost touch with or cultivating more meaningful relationships that you might long for,  enabling personal growth — emotional, relational, and creative. My practice provides one-to-one sessions, EMDR, couples work that aim to help you make more sense of your inner world, with less fear, as you move towards a more fulfilling and connected life.

Early on during the consultation process I will encourage you to identify with some goals for therapy, and together how we might work with a focus on what ‘better looks like for you’ in the future. Whether through EMDR, relationship work, or dynamic group settings, I create space for impactful change. My therapeutic specialisms include; working to reduce the distress of trauma and PTSD with EMDR, collaborating dynamically with couples to help them overcome relationships blocks, and empowering individuals to overcome any impact of depression & anxiety.

I am accredited to work with clients who self refer through the following UK health insurance with the following insurers; WPA, AXA PPP and Onebright.

Being a therapist requires a commitment to ongoing personal development and the humility of embracing continued learning. Over the past year, my path has led me to participate in retreats in Portugal, exploring how I can further connect to strength through vulnerability and inspiration to develop creativity in my practice. I am grateful to family and friends for their support and insight, and helping me to become the best version of myself.

My private therapy work and thinking is informed through various dynamic leadership roles I have held, including 10 years as CEO at The Counselling Foundation in Hertfordshire, where I oversaw the work of  150 people, providing BACP accredited therapy training and over 20,000 counselling sessions a year across Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.  Alongside my practice, I am Clinical Lead at The School of Life, a global publishing and well being brand. I provide clinical guidance to the organisation and their team of online therapists.

Over the past 3 years I have led and designed therapeutic retreats for The School of Life, guiding groups through experiences of deep reflection and personal change. The group facilitation work has enabled me to witness the transformative energy people connecting with others can provide for personal transformation, and is something that continues to inspire me for the future.

My background spans both therapy and leadership — including roles with The Counselling Foundation, The Samaritans, The Prince’s Trust as well as 8 years at Barclays Bank PLC. These experiences have allowed me to have a level of clarity of the challenges facing business professionals and entrepreneurs who are balancing busy lives, and connected to the practical lives of professionals lead.

My in-person practices are at 269 High Street in Berkhamsted, HP4 1AA as well as 17 Cavendish Square, London W1G 0TP. I also work remotely via Zoom video conferencing. Many clients have found online therapy as effective as face to face work, and can provide the necessary flexibility to access support.
