Robert and I have been working together for a few years now. I first started seeing him for my depression, it was actually my girlfriend’s idea to see someone and I was against the idea at first. However, a few sessions in I really started to realise the difference our sessions were beginning to make. One of the first things he said to me was; “we’re in a car, your driving and I have the map. I’m going to tell you where to go, however you’re driving so it’s up to you which way we go. Working with Jason
Jason was seeking to manage a complex situation, where a relationship with a work colleague had ended, and with the range of emotions, Jason needed to continue to maintain an effective working relationship and work through the feelings outside of that relationship dynamic, and to contain mixed feelings of longing, anger and loss. This was causing distress and impacting home life. The solution focussed work, revolved around asking Jason to establish some key short term and long terms, or how she wanted to feel or practical changes with the benefit of therapy. Integrating coaching techniques the work supported Jason to first establish and commit to firm and clear boundaries between herself and the colleague in her mind and then at work, to ensure support and help contain emotions. This meant not sharing emotional information with colleague , and directing this into therapy and friends, to enable the necessary transition and protect work. This was a difficult path, and worked with depression and bereavement, which was now possible within the discipline of the frame through solution focussed work.
